When the iPod first appeared in 2001, it created a revolution in the music industry, changing the way people listen to music and shaping the way artists distribute their songs. But who would have thought back then that the iPod Classic would in turn become a victim of the relentless march of technology?
Apple quietly announced last week it would discontinue its most iconic product, pulling it from its official website on Tuesday when all the attention was on the company's launch of its new smartwatch and two new phones: iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
It’s an end of an era for music and technology enthusiasts in general and for Apple fans in particular. The iPod Classic’s storage capabilities made it a revolutionary product that positioned Apple as more than just a computer company. It opened the way to many other “cool” products, including the iPhone, the icon of convergence that spelt the end for the single-use iPod.
While the iPod Classic might soon disappear from the market, it will remain present in the memories of its first users, and especially for expatriates who enjoyed listening to music from their countries of origin that are not easily available in the UAE. RIP, iPod Classic. You will be missed.
