Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, insisted he wants to stay at the club and keep Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres after Liverpool ended their disappointing campaign with a 0-0 draw at relegated Hull City.
The Spaniard had his first meeting with Martin Broughton, the club's new chairman, who has been brought in by co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to oversee the sale of the club, this week and another is scheduled in the next few days. Benitez left the door open to a departure if he felt things were not progressing as he wanted.
"I was in a meeting with the chairman and he was talking about how positive it was and I expect to meet with him again in the next week," said Benitez.
"I expect to see the chairman and keep talking with him. I showed my commitment for years [he has four years of his contract remaining]. It would never be easy to leave this club. I decided to come here because of the fans and the club.
"I wanted to stay and I would like to stay if everything is fine. And If I stay I am not thinking about selling Gerrard and Torres - just in case 'senior sources' say different things."
Wolves beat Sunderland 2-1 yesterday at Molineux, a defeat that left Steve Bruce, the visiting manager, "utterly gutted and totally disappointed." Kenwyne Jones gave Sunderland an early lead but Kevin Doyle, from the spot, and Adlene Guedioura, turned things around for Wolves before Michael Turner and substitute Jack Colback were then both sent off for Sunderland.
Elsewhere, goals from Kevin Davies and Ivan Klasnic gave Bolton a 2-1 home win against Birmingham at the Reebok Stadium. James McFadden got Birmingham's consolation. Diniyar Bilyaletdinov scored four minutes into injury-time as Everton beat bottom side Portsmouth 1-0.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
