South Africa’s miserable start to the Cricket World Cup has continued after Dale Steyn was ruled out through injury. The fast bowler had been carrying the injury since his brief spell at this year's Indian Premier League. He had not featured in either of the Proteas first two matches. In his absence they lost to both England and Bangladesh. After the loss to Bangladesh at The Oval, Faf du Plessis, South Africa's captain, had been optimistic of Steyn's recovery ahead of a crucial match against India, saying he had been bowling again in practice. However, the ICC announced on Tuesday that Steyn had been withdrawn from the competition. “The ICC has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 has approved Beuran Hendricks as a replacement player for Dale Steyn in the South Africa squad for the remainder of the tournament,” the ICC said. “Bowler Steyn has suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future. His replacement Hendricks is a left-arm fast bowler. “The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad.”
