Jonny Bairstow and David Warner were at it again on Wednesday night. The opening pair put together a breezy 66-run stand in less than six overs to power Sunrisers Hyderabad to a six-wicket win against Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Bairstow (61 not out) scored his first fifty of IPL 2019 – he also has a century to his credit – while Warner (50) scored the fifth half-century of the season with the two players finding themselves in first and third positions in the season's run chart. Pleased to stay until in the end to ensure victory, the Englishman said his unlikely partnership with the Australian Warner was down to a keen understanding of each other's game. “We complement each other really well," he said. "It’s handy to have a right and left-hand combination.” That said, it is the Hyderabad bowlers who deserve much of the credit for the win seeing as they stifled the IPL leaders, whose stand-in captain Suresh Raina won the toss and opted to bat first at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Raina's decision backfired on the defending champions as leg-spinner Rashid Khan put the brakes on their run-rate as he took 2-17. He received ample support from seam-bowling all-rounder Vijay Shankar (1-11), medium-pacer Khaleel Ahmed (1-22) and left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem (1-24). Chennai missed the late-innings batting exploits of captain MS Dhoni, out due to bad spasm, as they limped to 137-4. Defeat meant chances of qualification for the play-offs have been put on hold for now. Incredibly, Hyderabad are still only joint-fifth along with Kolkata Knight Riders in the table. But victory keeps them in contention for the next stage of the annual Twenty20 competition.
