The UAE made a fine start to their bid to play at the Under 19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa next year as they beat hosts Malaysia in the qualifying competition in Kuala Lumpur. Captain Aryan Lakra took three for 31 with his left-arm spin as the national team restricted the host nation to 206 in 48.4 overs in the opening match of the World Cup Qualifier. Fellow spinners Karthik Meiyappan and Rishabh Mukherjee also took four wickets between them, as the UAE clawed back the game after a bright start by the Malaysian top order. Syed Haider was named man of the match, after the UAE opener made 62 to pilot the chase. Alishan Sharafu was not out on 42 as victory was sealed with five wickets, and the best part of three overs, to spare. The winners of the six-team competition will advance directly to the main competition, which takes place in South Africa in January and February 2020. UAE will face Nepal, who thrashed Singapore by 217 runs in their opening game, on Saturday. Rohit Paudel, who played significant role in Nepal beating their UAE senior team in the limited-overs bilateral series in Dubai earlier this year, scored 95 as Nepal thrashed Singapore. Kuwait beat Oman by eight wickets in the other game in the opening round of Qualifier fixtures.
