Cristiano Ronaldo, the Real Madrid winger, insists he is not getting "obsessed" about the possibility of entering the Primera Liga record books.
Ronaldo scored four goals against Sevilla at the weekend and added a hat-trick in last night's 4-0 victory over Getafe to take his tally to 36 in La Liga this season.
That leaves him five clear of nearest challenger Lionel Messi of Barcelona - who have three games left this season compared to two for Madrid - in the race to win the Pichichi trophy for leading scorer.
It also means Ronaldo is just three goals away from breaking the single season top-flight record of 38 goals, set by Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra in 1950/51 and equalled by Madrid's Hugo Sanchez in 1989/90.
However, Ronaldo told Madrid's website: "I'm fighting to reach a very important mark, but I'm not obsessed about doing it."
Ronaldo has scored 49 goals in all competitions this season, making him the leading Madrid scorer in a single season, overtaking the legendary Ferenc Puskas' tally of 47 in the 1959/60 campaign.
Ronaldo added: "I'm not thinking a lot about that [the records], I prefer to do my thing to help the team to win and if I beat the records then that would be good, but if I don't to be honest I don't care about that.
"I just want to play to enjoy it and keep well myself."
Speaking about the win over Getafe, which delayed Barcelona's title celebrations at least by another 24 hours, Ronaldo added: "It was good, we won 4-0 and we played good.
"I scored three goals and I'm very proud of that, but the most important thing is that we win. We want to finish the league well and it's always important to win.
"It's true that on occasions my teammates have looked to try and help me score, but the team comes above the individual."
Aitor Karanka, the Madrid assistant coach, who was again speaking in place of Jose Mourinho in the post-match press conference, said of Ronaldo: "They are impressive figures and he is capable of doing this and much more with the quality he has.
"It's also the work of all the team, which also has impressive collective numbers this season."
