CENTURION, South Africa // AB de Villiers blasted a century off 75 balls and Jacques Kallis was 182 not out as South Africa reached 591-3 at lunch on day three of the first test against India today, a lead of 455 runs.
South Africa added 225 runs to its overnight score at SuperSport Park, passing its previous highest test total against India of 563 and continuing its dominance of the three-test series opener against cricket's top-ranked test team.
De Villiers' century was the fastest by a South African against India in tests. He smashed 11 fours and five sixes for 119 not out off 94 balls by lunch, dominating a 195-run partnership with Jacques Kallis.
Kallis, who began the day on 102, moved to 182 not out and within sight of his highest test score of 189. He had hit 12 fours and five sixes to close on a first-ever double century in his 143rd match. Kallis reached his 38th test century late yesterday.
Hashim Amla was the only wicket to fall for South Africa before lunch when Ishant Sharma had him caught by wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for 140 early on day three, his fourth century in his last four innings against the Indians.
But De Villiers and Kallis pushed South Africa on relentlessly, with their partnership adding 50 off 42 balls, then 100 on 101 balls and 150 off just 138 balls.
De Villiers attacked with leg-side pulls and hooks from early in his innings and raced to a 12th career test century with a heave over wide long-on for six off part-time spinner Suresh Raina.
