DUBAI // Zlatko Dalic says his Al Ain side have nothing to fear ahead of their Asian Champions League tie against Al Ahli.
The UAE champions travel to their main domestic rivals on Wednesday for the first leg of the last-16 continental encounter, knowing Ahli represent a significant obstacle to their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.
Al Ain, semi-finalists last year, come into the match at the Rashid Stadium in fine form, however, having earlier this month lifted a 12th league title. Ahli, meanwhile, struggled throughout their Arabian Gulf League title defence, finishing seventh.
The two teams know each other well, since they have spent the past few years battling one another for a succession of trophies. Ahli, now led by Cosmin Olaroiu, the former Al Ain coach, defeated the Garden City club in the Super Cup in March, although Al Ain won the most recent meeting – a 1-0 victory in the league.
Understandably, Dalic remains wary of the threat posed by Wednesday's opponents.
“Last season we played many games against Ahli, in the league and the Super Cup, and every time we had a tough game,” he said. “But the most important thing is that we impose our style on the match. The small details will be important.
“I trust my team. I have the best team – we don’t have any reason to be scared of anybody. We respect everyone, but I’ve big respect for my team, my players. Ahli are very strong and I expect a lot from them, especially Mr Cosmin, a big coach, the best in this region.
“But, I repeat, I don’t want to worry about the other team. For me, the most important is my players, my team.”
Ahli contest the Champions League knockout stages for the first time, having finished runners-up in Group D. Qualifying for the last 16 was one of the Dubai club's main objectives at the beginning of the season, yet Olaroiu says they have now recalibrated their aspirations.
He realises, too, that Al Ain constitute a considerable danger to those ambitions.
“They have experience in this competition,” Olaroiu said. “Even last year, they played a lot of Champions League games and have a very strong team. They are favourites to win this competition, but this is not enough.
“Now, the first game is at home. I was talking to the players and saying that, at this level of competition, we have to have a strategy for both games, not just the first. We have to think of the game as 180 minutes. We don’t stop here. We have to keep setting new targets.”

It's Monty Python's Crashing Rocket Circus
To the theme tune of the famous zany British comedy TV show, SpaceX has shown exactly what can go wrong when you try to land a rocket.
The two minute video posted on YouTube is a compilation of crashes and explosion as the company, created by billionaire Elon Musk, refined the technique of reusable space flight.
SpaceX is able to land its rockets on land once they have completed the first stage of their mission, and is able to resuse them multiple times - a first for space flight.
But as the video, How Not to Land an Orbital Rocket Booster, demonstrates, it was a case if you fail, try and try again.
Coffee: black death or elixir of life?
It is among the greatest health debates of our time; splashed across newspapers with contradicting headlines - is coffee good for you or not?
Depending on what you read, it is either a cancer-causing, sleep-depriving, stomach ulcer-inducing black death or the secret to long life, cutting the chance of stroke, diabetes and cancer.
The latest research - a study of 8,412 people across the UK who each underwent an MRI heart scan - is intended to put to bed (caffeine allowing) conflicting reports of the pros and cons of consumption.
The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, contradicted previous findings that it stiffens arteries, putting pressure on the heart and increasing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke, leading to warnings to cut down.
Numerous studies have recognised the benefits of coffee in cutting oral and esophageal cancer, the risk of a stroke and cirrhosis of the liver.
The benefits are often linked to biologically active compounds including caffeine, flavonoids, lignans, and other polyphenols, which benefit the body. These and othetr coffee compounds regulate genes involved in DNA repair, have anti-inflammatory properties and are associated with lower risk of insulin resistance, which is linked to type-2 diabetes.
But as doctors warn, too much of anything is inadvisable. The British Heart Foundation found the heaviest coffee drinkers in the study were most likely to be men who smoked and drank alcohol regularly.
Excessive amounts of coffee also unsettle the stomach causing or contributing to stomach ulcers. It also stains the teeth over time, hampers absorption of minerals and vitamins like zinc and iron.
It also raises blood pressure, which is largely problematic for people with existing conditions.
So the heaviest drinkers of the black stuff - some in the study had up to 25 cups per day - may want to rein it in.
