Baniyas moved top of the Arabian Gulf League after Al Jazira suffered a 2-0 defeat to Al Wahda in the Abu Dhabi derby. Tim Matavz put the home side in front with powerful strike in the 52nd minute and the captain Ismail Matar doubled the lead on 76 minutes to send Jazira to a third league defeat of the campaign. Wahda ended the game with 10 men when Khalil Ibrahim was sent off in injury time for a second bookable offence but the numerical disadvantage had no effect on the scoreline. Earlier, Baniyas edged out bottom team Hatta 1-0 at home to take their tally to 48 points. Argentine midfielder Nicolas Gimenez found the back of the net with a powerful strike that was enough for Baniyas to collect full points. Sharjah rallied from 2-0 down to salvage a 3-3 against Al Wasl at Zabeel Stadium. Joao Figueiredo handed Wasl the lead with a stunning overhead kick on 15 minutes. The Brazilian forward was on target again four minutes before the break. Welliton Soares closed the gap for Sharjah four minutes into the second half but Ali Salmin regained the home side’s two-goal advantage a minute later. Saif Rashid reduced the lead again on 76 minutes before Salem Saleh headed the equaliser two minutes into injury time. The result was another blow for Sharjah’s title defence as they sit seven points behind the leaders Shabab Al Ahli Dubai moved up to fourth after a 2-1 away win over Al Dhafra while Fujairah stunned Al Nasr 2-0. Ain defeated Ajman 2-0 and Kalba overcame Khorfakkan 2-1.
