Manchester City have once again topped the table for assembling European football's most expensive squad. According to data from from the Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory, the English Premier League club has remained ahead of European football big guns such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. The study of Europe's 'Big Five' leagues (Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1) suggests that City spent an estimated €1.036 billion ($1.22bn) on transfer fees – including add-ons – to put together their current squad, an increase of €22m on 2019. City rivals Manchester United increased their squad expenditure by a whopping €92m to €844m and move into the top three behind Champions League finalists Paris Saint-Germain on €888m. The English top-flight dominates the top 10 with six teams, while La Liga has the next biggest with two courtesy of Spanish giants Barca (€827m) and Real (€708m). The biggest increase was seen by London club Chelsea who jumped up €202m to €763m. European champions Bayern Munich are way down in 15th place on €408m.
