1 - Wayne Rooney: No transfer fee, in the latter stages of his career, but what could possibly trump Rooney's return to his first club Everton this summer? Manchester United's record scorer has failed to find the net in his opening two Europa League appearances for Everton. However, all eyes will be on him when the Premier League gets under way and there are plenty of questions to be answered, such as what position will he feature in, can he earn an England recall if he finds form and will the romance of a return home turn sour? 10 - Kelechi Iheanacho: The striker joined Leicester City from Manchester City for a fee of £25m - the going rate these days for a striker who has only just reached double figures for Premier League goals. With Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus ahead of him in the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium, and the inevitability of another big signing should either of them get injured or be sold, the Nigerian should find more regular action this season. 9 - Jordan Pickford: £30m for a goalkeeper from relegated Sunderland sounds steep but Everton's joint record buy will surely go on to become England's No 1 in the next few years. Was he made to look good last season because he was kept so busy? Should he have conceded so many goals despite playing behind a porous defence? We will learn more during the next few months. 8 - Kyle Walker: If the former Spurs man is worth the £50m or so Manchester City paid for him, what would Roberto Carlos be valued at in today's market? The full-back will add another dimension to City's right side with his athleticism, however, he will be judged in comparison with fellow full-back purchases Benjamin Mendy, who cost £52m from Monaco, and Danilo from Real Madrid. 7 - Javier Hernandez: Mexico's all-time leading scorer was a popular figure at Old Trafford during a spell which reaped 59 goals for Manchester United before joining Leverkusen in Germany. The goals continued to flow in the Bundesliga, so West Ham look like they finally have a consistent striker on their books following Andy Carroll's frequent trips to the treatment room. 6 - Alvaro Morata: He will have to perform wonders to repay Chelsea's £70m investment in him after his move from Real Madrid. Behind the likes of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo in the pecking order at Real, he is expected to take centre stage at Stamford Bridge as Diego Costa heads for the exit door. 5 - Alexandre Lacazette: Can the Frenchman be Arsenal's missing link after his £52m move from Lyon? Fellow countryman Olivier Giroud was a regular scorer but deemed too slow to fit in around the artistry provided by Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but the jet-heeled Lacazette should offer more fluency in the final third. 4 - Joe Hart: Why is West Ham's new goalkeeper so high in this list after his loan move from Manchester City? Because this will be the defining season on whether he can still cut it at the highest level after a patchy past 12 months. First, there were the high-profile errors at Euro 2016, then a season at Torino in which the club's president admitted he didn't expect so many errors, and then came the Scotland v England match this summer in which Hart was beaten by two long-distance free-kicks by Leigh Griffiths. 3 - Romelu Lukaku: Great expectations fall on the broad shoulders of Manchester United's new striker after his £75m move from Everton. United scored just 54 goals in the Premier League last season as manager Jose Mourinho opted for his typical pragmagtic approach, so it will be interesting to see if they are more fluent with Lukaku leading the front line in place of the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic. 2 - Neymar: A step out of the English Premier League for this one which was impossible to ignore. The Brazilian's world record €222 million (Dh960m) transfer from Barcelona to PSG took football spending to a whole new level, and he is likely to be huge success in France where the the league is, shall we say, less competitive than others in Europe. He will be expected to shine brightest in the Champions League, and for that fee he must deliver goals galore and at least the league title and a European final place. AFP
