The Arabian Gulf's sevens side kick-off a season which will eventually culminate in them playing on the biggest stage of all, at the Rugby World Cup in March, when they travel to Sri Lanka next weekend. Stephen Cooper's side will be lining up against the top sides in Asia when they play at the Singer SriLankan Airlines Sevens tournament in the historic hill town of Kandy, from Sept 5-6.
The vastly experienced Dubai Exiles centre Cooper, who will captain the Gulf, said: "I'm really looking forward to getting out on the pitch and playing with these guys. "We have trained hard over the summer and now we just want to get out there and play. "We let ourselves down in our last tournament [in Rome] so this is an opportunity to get things right and perform to a higher standard which I'm confident we can."
Despite the extreme heat, the Gulf have been training three times per week throughout the summer as they bid to improve on a dismal display in their first outing together at the end of last season. The started their "Roadmap to World Cup 2009" - which is being staged at The Sevens in Dubai next March - by losing all of their matches at the Rome Sevens. However, their coach Mike Lunjevich believes his side are "10 times better" now than there were in Rome, thanks to their summer exertions.
Lunjevich said: "Rome gave us a gauge on where we are at, and I think we are 10 times better where we are now. "The turnaround has been remarkable. "When we went to Rome, we had had maybe two training sessions together, because of the Asian Five Nations. "Now the guys are fully programmed back in to sevens. A lot of these guys prefer it to 15s, and you can see that by the way they express themselves on the field.
"The squad is very different, and there is some exciting young talent in there now. We are excited about guys like Jonny MacDonald, who is an extremely capable young player. "He has the skill and the speed that we want, as do Stuart Gibb and Dan Patching. These are the guys for the future. "They have stepped up to the mark, they are playing good rugby, have been training hard and shown that they want it."
