Champion mare Enable’s record bid for a hat-trick at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was undone by Waldgeist with a late charge under Pierre-Charles Boudot at the Longchamp racecourse on Sunday. Having finished behind Enable three times across two years, the Andre Fabre-trained five-year-old son of Galileo came up with a scintillating run in the final 50 yards to win by a length and a half on soft underfoot conditions. Waldgeist’s success took Fabre’s record in the race to eight since Trempolino’s triumph in 1987. “I’m very proud that Waldgeist managed to beat such a fantastic mare,” the veteran French trainer said in the post-race interview. “I'm delighted. He gave me a lot of confidence at Ascot and Pierre-Charles said he could have won. The Arc is always a big race because you have the combination of the best mares and colts and it's a great race.” John Gosden, who was looking for his fourth win in the race in five years, remained upbeat despite Enable’s defeat. “She ran an absolutely brilliant race,” he said of the mare’s first defeat in 12 starts. “Waldgeist came late and strong after they went at good pace. Frankie (Dettori) committed and went for it and with the ground testing her, it's hard to show that turn of foot. “Waldgeist outstayed her on the ground. Full credit to Andre (Fabre). I'm happy with the race but she doesn't have the same explosive turn of foot on soft ground. She quickened up well but was outstayed in very testing conditions.” Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager of Enable’s owner Khalid Abdullah, felt the mare had it tough in testing conditions. “She's been fantastic and Prince Khalid has enjoyed every moment with her. “We have to accept defeat in racing. Prince Khalid will make a decision on her future – he will want to reflect and give it some good thought,” he added when asked of Enable’s future. Earlier, another Fabre-trained Godolphin runner Victor Ludorum under Mickael Barzalona powered past his rivals to land the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. “I was very impressed with him, he's a neat horse and very relaxed,” said Fabre who will discuss the Shamardal two-year-old colt’s future with owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. “I will have to speak to Sheikh Mohammed regarding plans for next year but personally I would look at a French Classic campaign.” Victor Ludorum after completing the hat-trick joins two other Godolphin runners Earthlight and Pinatubo, both unbeaten in five starts, as the leading candidates for next year’s 2000 Guineas.
