ABU DHABI // The Dubai Hurricanes captain Chris Gregory believes they are back on the Gulf Premiership title hunt after a 64-13 thrashing of Doha. "It was a hard game but we thought we were always on top," said Gregory. "We were able to pile on the points in the second half, that's when Doha wilted under the intense pressure we had applied on them from the onset.
"They are a pretty decent side but this time we were really up for the challenge after losing the first game. "We started with a defeat last season and I don't see any reason why we can't win the league again, particularly after such a strong performance." The two times league champions ran up nine tries through Will Multiplex (2), Rich Torly, Mike China, Greg Thompson, Raino, Brad Barker, Alan Short and Gregory. Chris Doyal had eight goals and kicked a penalty.
Dan Hansom had a good game in the pack and Rama Chand made some strong runs at the back as the champions picked up from their 17-6 score at the break. "We got the momentum going in the second half," said Gregory, who returned to club action after being on duty for the Arabian Gulf in the GPS Tri Nation Sevens that involved Hong Kong and Kazakhstan. "The forwards had a great game," added the Hurricanes captain. "They won possession from the rucks and mauls and ensured the backs had a steady flow of the ball from the line-outs."
It was Doha's first defeat in three matches and once again proved their inability to travel with a strong squad. And after the Hurricanes' win, it appears the Dubai Exiles and the Abu Dhabi Harlequins will be their main challenges. The Exiles shot down the high flying Dragons 47-14 at home and the Abu Dhabi Quins bounced back with a thumping 67-12 away victory over Kuwait. @Email:apassela@thenational.ae
