Mortlock recalled for All Blacks clash



AUCKLAND // Australia have recalled their captain Stirling Mortlock and the experienced flanker Phil Waugh for Saturday's Tri Nations test against New Zealand. Mortlock has recovered from concussion and will replace Ryan Cross at outside centre, with Waugh coming in for the injured Rocky Elsom. Waugh's selection means the Wallabies will field two openside flankers for the first time under their new coach Robbie Deans.

Of the new faces in his side, Deans said: "They're two quality players. It is good to get both of them on the ground." Cross will start on the replacements' bench instead of Timana Tahu, who made his Wallabies debut in last Saturday's 34-19 win over New Zealand in Sydney. The All Blacks captain Richie McCaw has been elevated to his side's starting line-up. McCaw, who injured his ankle against England last month, returns to a side in crisis after losing their last two games.

The selectors have named three scrum-halves, bringing in Piri Weepu to be bracketed with Andy Ellis and Jimmy Cowan, who both sustained injuries in Sydney. Leon MacDonald was named at fullback with Mils Muliaina shifting to the wing in place of the dropped Anthony Tuitivake. Conrad Smith replaced Richard Kahui at centre, while Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu were both named at hooker and replacement loose forward Sione Lauaki has been dropped following his error-ridden performance against the Wallabies.

Anxiety and work stress major factors

Anxiety, work stress and social isolation are all factors in the recogised rise in mental health problems.

A study UAE Ministry of Health researchers published in the summer also cited struggles with weight and illnesses as major contributors.

Its authors analysed a dozen separate UAE studies between 2007 and 2017. Prevalence was often higher in university students, women and in people on low incomes.

One showed 28 per cent of female students at a Dubai university reported symptoms linked to depression. Another in Al Ain found 22.2 per cent of students had depressive symptoms - five times the global average.

It said the country has made strides to address mental health problems but said: “Our review highlights the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms and depression, which may long have been overlooked."

Prof Samir Al Adawi, of the department of behavioural medicine at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, who was not involved in the study but is a recognised expert in the Gulf, said how mental health is discussed varies significantly between cultures and nationalities.

“The problem we have in the Gulf is the cross-cultural differences and how people articulate emotional distress," said Prof Al Adawi. 

“Someone will say that I have physical complaints rather than emotional complaints. This is the major problem with any discussion around depression."

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:

- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools

- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say

- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance

- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs

- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills

- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
