Laura Massaro overcame an ill-tempered match against England teammate Sarah-Jane Perry on Day 2 to take a step closer to the last four of the PSA Dubai World Series Finals at the Emirates Golf Club.
The 15-13 7-11 11-8 victory took Massaro’s tally to two wins from two matches in Group B following her win over Egypt’s Raneem El Welily on Tuesday.
It was a physical game as tempers flared and as both players constantly disputed the referee’s decisions, it triggered an exchange of heated words by Massaro and Perry.

“How you can blame me for trying to back in more when I’m crowded to try and create space is just a joke,” said defending champion Massaro, who is bidding for her third Dubai title.
“I’m quite angry to finish that match like that, especially in comparison to how I ended yesterday. At the end of the day I won.
“There are a couple of movements maybe where the referee says to give better access, but other than that there’s nothing wrong with my movement and I’m fed up of people saying about it.
“We play for England twice a year and we have the Commonwealth Games every four years. It’s not like we’re teammates week in, week out, but obviously we want each other to do well.”
Massaro raced into a 10-6 lead in the opening game but Perry battled back to force the game and held two game balls of her own before going down 15-13.
Perry took the next game to level the tie but Massaro, who had won three of their four meetings, stepped up her game to take the decisive third game and the match in 48 minutes.
El Welily, the Egyptian world No 2, bounced back from her opening match defeat to Massaro with victory over Camille Serme of France 8-11 11-7 11-5.
In the men’s event, German Simon Rosner got the better of Egyptian world No 2 Ali Farag 7-11, 11-9 11-3 for his second win to lead Group B. Karim Abdul Gawad of Egypt edged out Frenchman Gregory Gaultier 9-11, 11-8, 11-4 in the same group.

Emirates flies from Dubai to Phnom Penh with a stop in Yangon from Dh3,075, and Etihad flies from Abu Dhabi to Phnom Penh with its partner Bangkok Airlines from Dh2,763.
