CHENNAI // India wrapped up a convincing 4-1 series win over West Indies after an impressive century by fringe batsman Manoj Tiwary helped the home side to a 34-run victory in their final one-day international.
Tiwary seized his opportunity as India made a slew of changes to its side, slamming a fine 104 before he had to retire hurt due to cramps.
His knock, supplemented by Virat Kohli's 80, guided India to a challenging 267 for six after electing to bat on a pitch with uneven bounce.
Tiwary, who has been pushing for a regular place in the India side for over three years, slammed 10 fours and a six during the superb knock in his sixth ODI after Kemar Roach had rocked the innings at the start with two wickets in as many balls.
In reply, the West Indies was all out for 233 in 44.1 overs, with Kieron Pollard's valiant 119 giving India some tense moments. Pollard smashed 10 sixes and four fours in his 110-ball knock and was the last man out.
His maiden century in 52 games was by far the most entertaining knock of the series, and had threatened to wipe out the good work done by Tiwary and Kohli.
"We know what Pollard can do on his day, but credit to the bowlers who stuck to their game as it was a matter of just one ball," India's stand-in captain Gautam Gambhir said. "It was good to see Manoj Tiwary get a hundred and also to test the bench strength."
Pollard was fortunate to reach the century mark as Kohli, at long-on, dropped an easy catch off leg-spinner Rahul Sharma when he was on 99.
"Congratulations to Pollard on his first one-day hundred, which was really good to watch," Darren Sammy, the West Indies captain, said. "We have been paying good cricket and fighting throughout, everybody expected us to roll over, but we didn't."
Apart from Sehwag, India also rested off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and pace bowler Vinay Kumar, bringing in batsmen Tiwary and Ajinkya Rahane along with Irfan Pathan.
Anxiety and work stress major factors
Anxiety, work stress and social isolation are all factors in the recogised rise in mental health problems.
A study UAE Ministry of Health researchers published in the summer also cited struggles with weight and illnesses as major contributors.
Its authors analysed a dozen separate UAE studies between 2007 and 2017. Prevalence was often higher in university students, women and in people on low incomes.
One showed 28 per cent of female students at a Dubai university reported symptoms linked to depression. Another in Al Ain found 22.2 per cent of students had depressive symptoms - five times the global average.
It said the country has made strides to address mental health problems but said: “Our review highlights the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms and depression, which may long have been overlooked."
Prof Samir Al Adawi, of the department of behavioural medicine at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, who was not involved in the study but is a recognised expert in the Gulf, said how mental health is discussed varies significantly between cultures and nationalities.
“The problem we have in the Gulf is the cross-cultural differences and how people articulate emotional distress," said Prof Al Adawi.
“Someone will say that I have physical complaints rather than emotional complaints. This is the major problem with any discussion around depression."
