Rahane and Uthappa get India off to a winning start in Bangladesh

DHAKA // Ajinkya Rahane and Robin Uthappa struck half-centuries to lead India to a seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh by D/L method in the first one-day international on Sunday.

Rahane made 64 while Uthappa marked his return to the national team after six years with a fluent 50 runs.

India reached the target by making 153 in 24.5 overs after the revised target was set 150 in 26 overs.

Ambati Rayudu was not out on 16 while Suresh Raina who confirmed the victory with a boundary remained unbeaten on 15. Shakib Al Hasan claimed two for 27.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan had hit half-centuries to lead Bangladesh to 272 for nine.

Rahim struck 59 while Shakib carried over his IPL form to the national side, hitting 52.

Rahim settled the innings with 52-run partnership with Anamul Haque after India had Bangladesh wobbling at 35-2. Haque hit 44.

Mahmudullah scored 41 off 44 with six fours to accelerate the innings in the later part. Nasir Hossain was the other notable contributor with 22.

Mashrafe Mortaza and Abdur Razzak also played their part to give the Bangladesh bowlers a reasonable total to defend.

Umesh Yadav who tormented the Bangladeshi batsmen with his pace, returned figures of three for 48. Amit Mishra ended with two for 55 while debutant Parvez Rasool claimed two for 60.

Day 4, Abu Dhabi Test: At a glance

Moment of the day Not much was expected – on Sunday or ever – of Hasan Ali as a batsman. And yet he lit up the late overs of the Pakistan innings with a happy cameo of 29 from 25 balls. The highlight was when he launched a six right on top of the netting above the Pakistan players’ viewing area. He was out next ball.

Stat of the day – 1,358 There were 1,358 days between Haris Sohail’s previous first-class match and his Test debut for Pakistan. The lack of practice in the multi-day format did not show, though, as the left-hander made an assured half-century to guide his side through a potentially damaging collapse.

The verdict As is the fashion of Test matches in this country, the draw feels like a dead-cert, before a clatter of wickets on the fourth afternoon puts either side on red alert. With Yasir Shah finding prodigious turn now, Pakistan will be confident of bowling Sri Lanka out. Whether they have enough time to do so and chase the runs required remains to be seen.
