Ravi Bopara has been called up to replace the injured Jonathan Trott in England’s squad for the third Test against India, starting in Birmingham on Wednesday.
Trott, who injured his shoulder while fielding in the second Test, is undergoing rehabilitation, the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement on Sunday.
Bopara, 26, has played 10 Test matches, the last coming against Australia in August 2009.
The 13-member squad for Edgbaston also includes Steven Finn, the pace bowler, as cover for Chris Tremlett, who missed the second Test with back spasms.
“Chris Tremlett is recovering well from the back spasms, and, although we are expecting him to be fully fit ahead of Wednesday, we felt it was prudent to include an extra seam bowler at this stage, meaning Steven Finn comes into the squad,” Geoff Miller, the national selector, said yesterday.
England lead the four-match series 2-0 against India, the No 1 ranked Test side.
Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid, who was a surprise recall into India’s limited-overs squad for the five-match one-day international (ODI) series after two years out of the side, will retire from one-dayers after the England tour.
Dravid, who said he was surprised to be selected for the series, added that he wanted to concentrate on Tests in the future.
The last time the 38 year old – who has scored 10,765 runs from 339 matches – played an ODI was in 2009 against the West Indies at the Champions Trophy in South Africa.
“I am honoured and privileged to be selected in the Indian one-day team,” he said after the warm-up match against Northamptonshire.
“Since I had not been picked for one-day cricket for the last two years, I was obviously a little surprised and to be honest, because I had not been picked, I had not informed the selectors or the board of my desire to solely focus on Test cricket.
“At the end of this one-day series, I would like to announce my retirement from one-day and Twenty20 cricket and concentrate only on Test cricket. I am committed, as always to give my best to India in this one-day series and obviously the Test series that follows.”
The selectors left out the injured Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh.
India will play a Twenty20 match on August 31 followed by five ODIs starting on September 3.
