Rio 2016: What to watch on Day 3 of the Olympics

The men’s gymnastics final takes place as heats for men’s and women’s swimming get underway. Rugby sevens women’s tournament comes to a close.

Gymnastics

The men’s team gymnastics final that takes place from 11pm (UAE) will have to go some way to outdo London 2012’s final for drama. Four years ago, a judges’ video review of the very last routine saw Japan elevated above hosts Britain for silver. China took gold.

Swimming

Great Britain’s James Guy won the 200-metre freestyle world title in Russia last year as he beat China’s Sun Yang. But the Olympic final (5.21am tomorrow) will be tougher as French 2012 Olympic champion Yannick Agnel returns to defend his title. Germany’s Paul Biedermann and America’s Conor Dwyer will also feature. The women’s 200m freestyle heats (from 8pm) should see Missy Franklin up against her rival and fellow American Katie Ledecky, who is almost two seconds quicker than Franklin.

Rugby sevens

The Olympics’ first sevens final will be held from 2am tomorrow in the women’s contest. Australia won the past women’s world series and New Zealand were the champions previously.

Eventing

From 5pm, the world’s leading eventers take to the cross-country course. Michael Jung, who led Germany to team gold and picked up the individual title in 2012, could be pushed all the way by teammate and 2014 world champion Sandra Auffarth aboard in-form Opgun Louvo.

Strait of Hormuz

Fujairah is a crucial hub for fuel storage and is just outside the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route linking Middle East oil producers to markets in Asia, Europe, North America and beyond.

The strait is 33 km wide at its narrowest point, but the shipping lane is just three km wide in either direction. Almost a fifth of oil consumed across the world passes through the strait.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strait, a move that would risk inviting geopolitical and economic turmoil.

Last month, Iran issued a new warning that it would block the strait, if it was prevented from using the waterway following a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major Iranian oil importers.
