Marty Turco made 49 saves as the Dallas Stars beat Washington 4-3 in a shoot-out on Monday night to end the Capitals' 13-game winning run on home ice.
Loui Eriksson scored the winner, but it was the netminder who was the hero as he made his most saves in a game this season. "It was all about the win," Turco said.
"It's not going to be every night that your goalie's going to wear a mask and steal a game for you," said Marc Crawford, the Dallas coach. "We needed a great goaltending performance tonight, and Marty was absolutely terrific.
"We love the fact that he fought and fought and fought and fought - and got a pay-off."
Indeed, the whole of the Stars team battled as they came from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead before Alex Ovechkin's second goal of the game, with less than four minutes left, sent the game into overtime. The brace ended a six-game goal-scoring drought for the Capitals player.
"He was frustrated the last few games. I told him, 'You've got to work harder'," said Bruce Boudreau, the Capitals coach, of his star player.
"You saw it in the first two or three shifts in the game - he was trying to hit guys. He had his energy back.
"When he has his energy, well, he is what he is: the best player in the world."
"When you come into a team with that much confidence, and that good in this building, I don't mind saying that [Turco] has to be our best player probably on those nights," said Brad Richards, who scored Dallas' first goal. "We don't have the talent to match up with them, line-for-line and player-for-player. Some nights, it should be called 'goalie' not 'hockey'."
In the night's other game, the Los Angeles Kings thrashed the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-0. The game was all but over after 15:19 as the Kings held a 4-0 lead, including power-play goals from Michal Handzus and Alexander Frolov just 41 second apart.
And Rick Nash, the leading goal-scorer for the Blue Jackets, left the game late in the first period because of an undisclosed lower-body injury.
Fredrik Modin also scored for the Kings - his second goal in three games since Los Angeles acquired him from the Blue Jackets in a trade last week.
