COLOMBO // Sachin Tendulkar hit a superb 138, his 44th one-day international hundred, to power India to 319 for five in the Tri-series final against Sri Lanka on Monday. India opened the batting with Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid after winning the toss and the experienced pair set a good platform with a stand of 95. Dravid made 39 before offering a catch off Sanath Jayasuriya. Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, promoting himself up the order, then played second fiddle to Tendulkar in a second-wicket stand that raised 110 off 115 balls. Dhoni fell to Lasith Malinga for 56.
Yuvraj Singh continued the momentum with Tendulkar adding a further 71 for the third wicket before Tendulkar, handicapped by a thigh strain and with the assistance of a runner, finally fell. He scored two successive boundaries by reverse sweeping Ajantha Mendis but attempting a third was ruled out lbw. Sri Lanka snapped up the wickets of Yusuf Pathan for nought and Suresh Raina for eight before Yuvraj, in a final flourish, completed his 41st one-day fifty to give India a formidable target.

When the W Dubai – The Palm hotel opens at the end of this year, one of the highlights will be Massimo Bottura’s new restaurant, Torno Subito, which promises “to take guests on a journey back to 1960s Italy”. It is the three Michelinstarred chef’s first venture in Dubai and should be every bit as ambitious as you would expect from the man whose restaurant in Italy, Osteria Francescana, was crowned number one in this year’s list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Another exciting opening at the W Dubai – The Palm hotel is South Korean chef Akira Back’s new restaurant, which will continue to showcase some of the finest Asian food in the world. Back, whose Seoul restaurant, Dosa, won a Michelin star last year, describes his menu as, “an innovative Japanese cuisine prepared with a Korean accent”.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
The highly experimental chef, whose dishes are as much about spectacle as taste, opens his first restaurant in Dubai next year. Housed at The Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will feature contemporary twists on recipes that date back to the 1300s, including goats’ milk cheesecake. Always remember with a Blumenthal dish: nothing is quite as it seems.
Short-term let permits explained
Homeowners and tenants are allowed to list their properties for rental by registering through the Dubai Tourism website to obtain a permit.
Tenants also require a letter of no objection from their landlord before being allowed to list the property.
There is a cost of Dh1,590 before starting the process, with an additional licence fee of Dh300 per bedroom being rented in your home for the duration of the rental, which ranges from three months to a year.
Anyone hoping to list a property for rental must also provide a copy of their title deeds and Ejari, as well as their Emirates ID.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
