Undefeated Detroit Lions rally back to beat Dallas Cowboys

ARLINGTON, TEXAS // Matthew Stafford saw his defence start wiping out a 24-point deficit with interceptions returned for touchdowns midway through the third quarter, then he and Calvin Johnson took over from there, leading the Detroit Lions to a stunning 34-30 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

A week after turning a 20-point half-time deficit into an overtime win, the Lions provided further proof they are a legitimate contender this season.

Detroit move to 4-0 and have won an NFL-best eight straight games. This also was their franchise-record fifth straight road win, avenging a loss here last November that had been their NFL-record 26th straight road loss.

Tony Romo and the Cowboys (2-2) continued to show there is no lead and no deficit too big for them. They blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead for the first time in their franchise history in the opener against.

Packers 49 Broncos 23

Aaron Rodgers threw for a career-high 408 yards, tied a personal best with four touchdown passes and rushed for two more scores as the Green Bay Packers remained unbeaten.

Charles Woodson ran an interception back for a touchdown for the Packers (4-0), to join their resurgent NFC North rivals Detroit as the only undefeated teams left in the NFL.

Eric Decker caught a pair of touchdowns from Kyle Orton for Denver (1-3). Orton threw for 273 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Bengals 23 Bills 20

At Cincinnati, Andy Dalton, the rookie quarterback, shook off a horrid first half and led his first comeback victory, culminating in Mike Nugent's 43-yard field goal as time ran out against the previously unbeaten Buffalo Bills.

Dalton threw a touchdown pass and ran 3 yards on a draw play, tying the game with 4:09 to go. He scrambled for a first down on the winning drive and Nugent ended it with his third field goal in front of the smallest crowd of Paul Brown Stadium's history.

The Bengals (2-2) overcame a 17-3 half-time deficit to end a 10-game losing streak against Buffalo (3-1).

49ers 24 Eagles 23

At Philadelphia, the 49ers surged back from a 20-point deficit for the victory.

Vick was not hampered by his bruised right hand, throwing for a career-high 416 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 75 yards. But the Philadelphia defence fell apart in the final 30 minutes, and Frank Gore capped a 77-yard drive with a 12-yard TD run with 3 minutes remaining.

David Akers, the former Eagles kicker, who left for San Francisco as a free agent this summer, kicked the decisive extra point. His replacement, rookie Alex Henery, missed from 39 and 33 yards in the final period.

Philadelphia (1-3) have been outscored 36-0 in the fourth quarter of their last three games, all losses. The 49ers (3-1) are on top of the NFC West in Jim Harbaugh's rookie season as coach.

Texans 17 Steelers 10

At Houston, Arian Foster rushed for 155 yards and the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter as Houston overcame an injury to All-Pro Andre Johnson for the win.

Johnson left in the second quarter with a right hamstring injury and did not return though he was back on the sideline late to watch Houston (3-1) finish off the injury-plagued Steelers (2-2).

Ben Roethlisberger was under pressure all day and was sacked five times behind an offensive line missing two regular starters. The quarterback injured his left leg late in the game and left the stadium wearing a walking boot.

The Steelers lost running back Rashard Mendenhall (hamstring), linebacker James Harrison (eye) and defensive end Aaron Smith (foot) during the game.

Foster, the 2010 NFL rushing champion, finally looked healthy after weeks of nursing a left hamstring strain.

Patriots 31 Raiders 19

At Oakland, California, Tom Brady bounced back from a four-interception performance by throwing for 226 yards, two touchdowns and committing no turnovers.

Wes Welker caught nine passes for 158 yards and a score, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Stevan Ridley adding rushing touchdowns and the Patriots (3-1) played a mostly mistake-free game after last week's surprising loss in Buffalo.

This time the interception that changed the game was made by New England instead of Brady making the error. Patrick Chung got a gift-wrapped pick in the end zone late in the first half when Jason Campbell inexplicably threw the ball right to the safety with no receiver in the area for the Raiders (2-2).

Redskins 17 Rams 10

In St Louis, Ryan Torain ran for 135 yards and a 20-yard score, and Washington held off a late rally by winless St Louis.

The Redskins (3-1) dominated in defence and got two of their seven sacks late by Stephen Bowen and Brian Orakpo to knock the Rams (0-4) out of scoring position.

Titans 31 Browns 13

At Cleveland, Matt Hasselbeck's fresh start in Tennessee has his team off to an unexpected excellent start.

The 13-year veteran quarterback, who left Seattle as a free agent after a play-off filled decade, threw three TD passes in the first half and the safety Jordan Babineaux returned an interception 97 yards for a TD for their third straight win under Mike Munchak in his first year as coach.

Hasselbeck threw for 194 yards in the first half while helping the Titans (3-1) build a 21-6 lead.

The 36-year-old finished 10 of 20 for 220 yards - 26 on two completions after half time.

Saints 23 Jaguars 10

At Jacksonville, Florida, Drew Brees threw for 351 yards and a touchdown, Darren Sproles added 188 yards and New Orleans improved to 3-1.

The Saints scored TDs on their first two possessions and looked well on their way to reaching 30 points for the fourth consecutive week. But Brees threw two interceptions, and the Saints were forced to settle for three field goals in the second half.

It did not matter against the Jaguars (1-3), who have scored just 39 points this season. They have two touchdowns in rookie Blaine Gabbert's two starts.

Gabbert completed 16 of 42 passes for 196 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.

Bears 34 Panthers 29

At Chicago, Devin Hester set an NFL record with his 11th punt return for a touchdown and Matt Forte ran for a career-high 205 yards for Chicago (2-2).

Hester had earlier set up a TD run by Forte with a 73-yard kick-off return before he ran back a punt 69 yards in the second quarter to move ahead of Eric Metcalf on the all-time list. He performed three somersaults in the end zone with the lead at 24-10, but the celebration was a little early.

The Panthers cut the lead to four points at half time and had their chances to take the lead in the second half but came up short, spoiling coach Ron Rivera's return to Soldier Field.

Rookie Cam Newton threw for 374 yards for the Panthers (1-3) and Steve Smith passed Muhsin Muhammad as the team's leading receiver, finishing with 181 yards on eight catches. He now has 9,414 in his career.

Chargers 26 Dolphins 16

At San Diego, Philip Rivers threw for 307 yards and one touchdown and San Diego knocked out Miami quarterback Chad Henne.

Henne hurt his left shoulder at the end of a run on a broken play on the Dolphins' second possession and did not return. Although backup Matt Moore led the Dolphins to the game's first TD, Rivers' passing eventually overpowered the Dolphins (0-4).

Rivers threw a 55-yard TD pass to Vincent Jackson to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter. Ryan Mathews' 48-yard gain on a screen pass set up Mike Tolbert's one-yard leap over the pile for a 20-10 lead for the Chargers (3-1) early in the third quarter.

Falcons 30 Seahawks 28

At Seattle, Matt Ryan threw for 291 yards, rookie Julio Jones caught 11 passes for 127 yards, and Atlanta held off a second-half rally by Seattle.

Ryan was brilliant in the first half. He started out 13-for-15 and had a one-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez on Atlanta's first possession. Michael Turner also ran for TDs of 21 and one yards in the first half.

Matt Bryant's 50-yard field goal early in the third quarter gave Atlanta (2-2) a 27-7 lead.

Tarvaris Jackson threw for three TDs, but the Seahawks (1-3) could not complete the comeback, and Steven Hauschka missed a 61-yard field goal attempt with 13 seconds left.

Giants 31 Cardinals 27

At Glendale, Arizona, Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes in a 58-second span late in the game to rally New York.

The scoring passes of two yards to Jake Ballard with 3:37 to go and 29 yards to Hakeem Nicks with 2:39 left came after the Cardinals (1-3) seemingly had taken control of the game 27-17 on Beanie Wells' third rushing touchdown of the game with 5:16 to go.

Manning completed 7 of 8 for 126 yards on the decisive drives as the Giants (3-1) won their third in a row. He finished 27 of 40 for 371 yards. Nicks caught 10 for 162 yards.

Wells rushed for a career-best 138 yards.

Chiefs 22 Vikings 17

At Kansas City, Matt Cassel hit Dwayne Bowe for a 52-yard fourth-quarter touchdown pass, Ryan Succop was perfect on five field-goal attempts and the Chiefs won their first this season.

Succop's accurate right leg had already staked Kansas City (1-3) to a 15-10 lead by the start of the fourth quarter when Cassel dropped back to pass. He saw Bowe get around Cedric Griffin, who had slipped just after the snap, and hit his Pro Bowl wide receiver in stride.

Bowe made a pirouette to get around the safety Jamarca Sanford, then broke Griffen's tackle as the cornerback tried to recover, and trotted the last couple of yards for the touchdown.

Minnesota are now 0-4.

Ravens 34 Jets 17

Baltimore scored three touchdowns on defence, all off turnovers by the New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, and cruised to victory in a bizarre game that featured an NFL-record five returns for scores.

Baltimore's three touchdowns on defence were the most in franchise history. Jameel McClain took a fumble by Sanchez six yards for a score on New York's first offensive play, Jarret Johnson scored on a 26-yard fumble return and Lardarius Webb put the Ravens up 34-17 in the third quarter by taking an interception 73 yards into the end zone.

New York (2-2) have lost seven straight games to the Ravens (3-1).

Guide to intelligent investing
Investing success often hinges on discipline and perspective. As markets fluctuate, remember these guiding principles:
  • Stay invested: Time in the market, not timing the market, is critical to long-term gains.
  • Rational thinking: Breathe and avoid emotional decision-making; let logic and planning guide your actions.
  • Strategic patience: Understand why you’re investing and allow time for your strategies to unfold.

How to avoid crypto fraud

  • Use an offline private key, a physical device that requires manual activation, whenever you access your wallet.
  • Avoid suspicious social media ads promoting fraudulent schemes.
  • Only invest in crypto projects that you fully understand.
  • Critically assess whether a project’s promises or returns seem too good to be true.
  • Only use reputable platforms that have a track record of strong regulatory compliance.
  • Store funds in hardware wallets as opposed to online exchanges.

Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.

A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.

Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.

A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.

On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.

The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.

Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.

The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.

Haemoglobin disorders explained

Thalassaemia is part of a family of genetic conditions affecting the blood known as haemoglobin disorders.

Haemoglobin is a substance in the red blood cells that carries oxygen and a lack of it triggers anemia, leaving patients very weak, short of breath and pale.

The most severe type of the condition is typically inherited when both parents are carriers. Those patients often require regular blood transfusions - about 450 of the UAE's 2,000 thalassaemia patients - though frequent transfusions can lead to too much iron in the body and heart and liver problems.

The condition mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, South-East Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Saudi Arabia recorded 45,892 cases of carriers between 2004 and 2014.

A World Health Organisation study estimated that globally there are at least 950,000 'new carrier couples' every year and annually there are 1.33 million at-risk pregnancies.

Three tips from La Perle's performers

1 The kind of water athletes drink is important. Gwilym Hooson, a 28-year-old British performer who is currently recovering from knee surgery, found that out when the company was still in Studio City, training for 12 hours a day. “The physio team was like: ‘Why is everyone getting cramps?’ And then they realised we had to add salt and sugar to the water,” he says.

2 A little chocolate is a good thing. “It’s emergency energy,” says Craig Paul Smith, La Perle’s head coach and former Cirque du Soleil performer, gesturing to an almost-empty open box of mini chocolate bars on his desk backstage.

3 Take chances, says Young, who has worked all over the world, including most recently at Dragone’s show in China. “Every time we go out of our comfort zone, we learn a lot about ourselves,” she says.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.

Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.

Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.

“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.

Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.

From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.

Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.

BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.

Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.

Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.

“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.

Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.

“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.

“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”

The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”
