Whisenhunt keeping cards close to his chest

GLENDALE, ARIZONA // Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said he has not decided whether Matt Leinart or Derek Anderson will be Cardinals' starting quarterback this season. Both had solid but unspectacular performances in the team's 14-9 pre-season victory over the Chicago Bears on Saturday night. Anderson passed for 94 yards and a touchdown, while Leinart had 84 yards and a touchdown. "I don't have to make any decisions right now," Whisenhunt said. "The starting QB evaluation covers more things than just this game."

BALTIMORE // Baltimore worked on its no-huddle offence against the New York Giants, with good results. Joe Flacco threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns for the pass-happy Ravens, whose quick offence befuddled the Giants in a 24-10 win. Flacco completed 21 of 34 passes; last season, he threw as many as 34 passes only seven times as the Ravens relied heavily on their running game.

HOUSTON // The Houston Texans showed signs of an improved running game as they won the battle of Texas, 23-7 over the Dallas Cowboys. Arian Foster rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown for the Texans. Foster, who emerged as Houston's most dependable running back late last season, became the first Texan to go over 100 yards rushing in a preseason game. The Texans finished with 173 yards rushing, an encouraging sign for coach Gary Kubiak, whose team ranked 30th in rushing (92 yards per game) last season.

TAMPA // Josh Johnson gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the reassurance they sought with starting quarterback Josh Freeman sidelined by a broken thumb. Filling in for Freeman, who the Bucs expect to return in time for their regular season, Johnson completed Nine of 14 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown in a 19-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The third-year pro has shown enough progress that the Bucs feel comfortable with the idea of him starting if Freeman doesn't recover as quickly as expected in time for the new season.
