With the UAE Football Association drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements to replace Mahdi Ali as manager of the national team, we look at five candidates with international experience who could fit the bill.
Alberto Zaccheroni
The Italian, 64, is perhaps best known for taking AC Milan to the 1998/99 scudetto. Served as Japan national team manager for four years from 2010, in which time he led the country to 2011 Asian Cup success and to the 2014 World Cup. Last managed China’s Beijing Guoan, but was fired five months into his reign last year.
Fabio Capello
The Italian, 70, is hugely respected within club football following significant success with AC Milan, Roma, Real Madrid and Juventus. However, his international pedigree was questioned during a difficult four-year spell with England from 2008, when he led the team to the 2010 World Cup. Then spent three years in charge of Russia, taking them to the 2014 World Cup.
Edgardo Bauza
The Argentine, 59, was fired as manager of his national team last week following a dismal World Cup qualifying campaign that leaves Argentina fifth, one spot outside automatic qualification. He lasted eight months. Previously managed several clubs in his homeland and South America. Has experience of Gulf football having been employed at Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr in 2009.
Louis van Gaal
The Dutchman, 65, enjoyed sustained club success with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Had two different spells with the Netherlands, failing to take his country to the 2002 World Cup, but making amends somewhat in 2014, when he led the national team to the semi-finals. Last managed Manchester United, but was fired last May after two years at the club.
Luiz Felipe Scolari
The Brazilian, 68, is best known for leading Brazil to the 2002 World Cup title. His second stint with the national team was not as successful, with Brazil losing 7-1 to Germany in the 2014 semi-finals. He resigned shortly after. Has managed in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait – including their national team - Uzbekistan and China. Currently employed at Guangzhou Evergrande.
