Dozens of bus stops have been converted into taxi stands to make it easier to hail a ride in Abu Dhabi. The Integrated Transport Centre said it had adopted 40 bus stops no longer in use to make things easier for passengers in areas where taxis are in high demand. The plan is part of efforts to ensure ample taxi spaces are available. It is the latest bid to improve working conditions for taxi drivers operating in the UAE capital. In May, a directive was enforced to ensure taxi drivers do not work more than 12 hours a day. The Department of Transport said it was capping time spent behind the wheel to "ensure the safety" of drivers, passengers and other road users. Taxi drivers across the emirate admitted to working marathon shifts of up to 15 hours to meet their monthly targets and earn a higher wage. The DOT also installed an automated system in taxis to inform the driver when they were approaching the end of their shift.
