ABU DHABI // A senior figure at the UN World Food Programme has declared himself "stunned" after a school in the capital donated nearly Dh200,000 to pay for meals for needy children. Finbarr Curran, the WFP's director of field and emergency support, yesterday accepted a cheque for Dh189,212 (US$51,560) from the British School - Al Khubairat. Pupils at the primary school section had been raising the money for a year as part of the school's celebrations to mark its 40th anniversary.
The 950 youngsters raised more than Dh15,000 by bringing in one dirham coins, and held sponsored events ranging from karaoke singing to reading. A teacher at the school, Phil Latham, ran the Dubai marathon to help raise funds. "I'm stunned at the amount of money raised. It's fantastic," said Mr Curran, who is based in Dubai. Mark Yeowell, the primary school head teacher, described the total raised by the three to 11-year-olds as "an amazing achievement".
"Some of the things were led by the school, some of them by the children. It's a way for the children themselves to do something that makes a difference, so they can feel ownership of the process," he said. The funds will be go to the WFP's school feeding programme, which last year provided meals for nearly 20 million children. Mr Curran said that, as well as providing food at schools, the programme encourages parents to send their children to school.
It operates in about 70 of the 80 countries in which the WFP is active. Mr Yeowell added: "Many of our children in the school are very well-travelled and they come from all over the world. "They don't always know that in the countries they visit there are needy children. This is a good way to give them an appreciation of the needs of others." dbardsley@thenational.ae

US tops drug cost charts
The study of 13 essential drugs showed costs in the United States were about 300 per cent higher than the global average, followed by Germany at 126 per cent and 122 per cent in the UAE.
Thailand, Kenya and Malaysia were rated as nations with the lowest costs, about 90 per cent cheaper.
In the case of insulin, diabetic patients in the US paid five and a half times the global average, while in the UAE the costs are about 50 per cent higher than the median price of branded and generic drugs.
Some of the costliest drugs worldwide include Lipitor for high cholesterol.
The study’s price index placed the US at an exorbitant 2,170 per cent higher for Lipitor than the average global price and the UAE at the eighth spot globally with costs 252 per cent higher.
High blood pressure medication Zestril was also more than 2,680 per cent higher in the US and the UAE price was 187 per cent higher than the global price.

Types of fraud
Phishing: Fraudsters send an unsolicited email that appears to be from a financial institution or online retailer. The hoax email requests that you provide sensitive information, often by clicking on to a link leading to a fake website.
Smishing: The SMS equivalent of phishing. Fraudsters falsify the telephone number through “text spoofing,” so that it appears to be a genuine text from the bank.
Vishing: The telephone equivalent of phishing and smishing. Fraudsters may pose as bank staff, police or government officials. They may persuade the consumer to transfer money or divulge personal information.
SIM swap: Fraudsters duplicate the SIM of your mobile number without your knowledge or authorisation, allowing them to conduct financial transactions with your bank.
Identity theft: Someone illegally obtains your confidential information, through various ways, such as theft of your wallet, bank and utility bill statements, computer intrusion and social networks.

1 The kind of water athletes drink is important.
