Atlantis hotel offers a mix of modern and traditional for Ramadan

DUBAI // Lit by 312 gold chandeliers and furnished with plush red cushions and mahogany seating, the vast iftar tent at Atlantis, The Palm, looks set to be one of the city's most elaborate. More than 300 hotel staff have worked around the clock for the past two months to erect the tent. Dubbed Asateer, which means "myths" or "legends" in Arabic, the tent boasts six majlis, each containing a television set and Nintendo PlayStation apart from other entertainment.

However, those seeking a more traditional iftar experience can play cards, chess or backgammon, and enjoy the music of an oud player who will entertain guests with classical Arabic tunes. "We made the significant investment of over US$1million [Dh3.7m] to honour the traditions of the holy month of Ramadan in a unique and innovative environment," said Serge Zaalof, the hotel's chief executive. At 2,400 square metres, it is one of the largest iftar tents in Dubai, seating 616 people in its majlis overlooking the Palm.

The iftar menu features traditional foul nabet, an Arabic fava beans dish, as well as Arabic ice cream, flavoured with pistachio and rose water, which will be prepared in front of the guests. loatway@thenational.ae
