ABU DHABI // The Criminal Court of First Instance heard evidence in the case of two Emirati brothers and a Russian friend who are accused of burning their Pakistani driver to death. The Emiratis, OA and SA, both 19 years old, and their Russian friend, VB, are accused of first-degree murder, consumption of alcohol and stealing the Pakistani man's wallet.
The Pakistani worked as a driver for the two brothers and their family, according to the case being brought by Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution. The incident occurred five months ago, the court heard, when the three men allegedly had an altercation with the driver, hitting him over the head and knocking him unconscious. The prosecution alleged that the men then poured petrol over him, and set light to it in the compound where the brothers lived, in an apparent attempt to destroy any evidence of the crime.
Police submitted the remains and ashes of the driver to the coroner's office in April. The charges do not specify whether the men were acting under the influence of alcohol or had consumed alcohol before the incident. The next hearing in the case was postponed until October 5 in order for the families of the accused to attempt to resolve the case by offering blood money to the victim's family. Even if the family accepts a settlement, the accused could still receive a five-year sentence.
The men are being tried as adults and have been denied bail pending a verdict. The defendants' pleas, entered by the accused at a previous hearing, have not been made public. The Russian Embassy said it was aware of the case but declined to comment. myoussef@thenational.ae

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.

Anxiety and work stress major factors
Anxiety, work stress and social isolation are all factors in the recogised rise in mental health problems.
A study UAE Ministry of Health researchers published in the summer also cited struggles with weight and illnesses as major contributors.
Its authors analysed a dozen separate UAE studies between 2007 and 2017. Prevalence was often higher in university students, women and in people on low incomes.
One showed 28 per cent of female students at a Dubai university reported symptoms linked to depression. Another in Al Ain found 22.2 per cent of students had depressive symptoms - five times the global average.
It said the country has made strides to address mental health problems but said: “Our review highlights the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms and depression, which may long have been overlooked."
Prof Samir Al Adawi, of the department of behavioural medicine at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, who was not involved in the study but is a recognised expert in the Gulf, said how mental health is discussed varies significantly between cultures and nationalities.
“The problem we have in the Gulf is the cross-cultural differences and how people articulate emotional distress," said Prof Al Adawi.
“Someone will say that I have physical complaints rather than emotional complaints. This is the major problem with any discussion around depression."
