Dubai driver faces deportation after faking ticket to get free parking

A Dubai driver who tried to trick his way out of paying for parking by altering the date on an expired ticket is to be deported.

The Bangladeshi man, 44, pasted a number from a used parking ticket onto another to make it appear as if it was still valid.

He placed the forged Dh2 ticket behind the windscreen of his Toyota Corolla after parking it in front of a restaurant in Naif, Dubai, on March 5.

But a discrepancy was noticed by a parking inspector from the Roads and Transport Authority who was patrolling the area.

The driver of the vehicle arrived as the inspector was examining the ticket.

“The owner of the car arrived as I was looking at the ticket and I asked him to hand it over,” said the Emirati inspector.

When the inspector looked at it, he noticed that the 44-year-old accused had cut the number 5 from an old ticket and pasted it on an expired one carrying a different area code.

The inspector alerted police and the man was arrested.

The accused denied charges of forging an official document and using the document during a previous hearing at Dubai Criminal Court.

But he was convicted in court on Thursday and handed a three-month suspended sentence.

He has two weeks to appeal the sentence, but will be deported immediately if he is not successful.
