ABU DHABI // On his way to the clinic, a prisoner at Al Wathba picked up some drugs - specifically heroin, the Criminal Court heard last week.
The prisoner grabbed a roll of the illegal narcotic from another inmate on his way to the infirmary, the court was told.
A guard said the inmate had asked to go to the jail clinic, and on his way walked by the other inmate's cell.
"I saw him stretch his hand between the cell's bars and then I saw a white roll in his hand, so I told him to go back to his block," the guard testified.
The inmate was searched, then ordered to take the roll out of his pocket. It contained a white powder later found to be heroin.
The inmate begged the guard not to report the incident.
The guard told the court that he did not see the other inmate hand over the roll, but did see the first defendant reach between the bars to grab it.
The defendant requested that the court ask the guard whether prison uniforms contained pockets.
The guard responded that they did not but said sometimes inmates added pockets. He said modified uniforms were confiscated if found.
A verdict is scheduled to be announced on Wednesday.

A rise in obesity figures and the need for more public spending is a familiar trend in the developing world as western lifestyles are adopted.
One in five deaths around the world is now caused by bad diet, with obesity the fastest growing global risk. A high body mass index is also the top cause of metabolic diseases relating to death and disability in Kuwait, Qatar and Oman – and second on the list in Bahrain.
