Prisoner set fire to detention centre over 'mistreatment', Dubai court hears

DUBAI // A prisoner set fire to the dining room at Al Qusais detention centre because he was being mistreated, a court heard today.

Prosecutors told the Criminal Court that TK, an Emirati, used a cigarette lighter to set on fire a stuffed chair on July 4 last year. The fire then spread through the room.

HE, a police captain, 36, was on duty at the time. He said the prisoner told him he started the fire because he was being mistreated. Civil defence arrived and put out the flames.

In court, the prisoner denied the charge.

The next hearing will be on April 25.
