Rape, threats earn one-year sentence

DUBAI // A Pakistani man convicted of raping a woman and threatening to post naked pictures of her on Facebook was sentenced to one year in prison this morning.

ST, 22, who was found guilty at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance of sexually assaulting a Filipina woman, had denied the charges, saying he suffered from erectile dysfunction. Prosecutors said he photographed the woman during the assault and threatened to publish the images on the social networking site.

The victim's age and occupation were not provided. According to prosecutors, ST tricked her into meeting him in the Jumeirah area on November 4, 2010, by inviting her to a party.

He then took the woman to his office in the Naif district. After she walked inside, he raped her twice in the reception area and once in the bathroom, prosecutors say.

She said ST photographed her during and after the rape. She told police she met him at midnight and was with him until 4.30am before she was taken to her home in Ajman.

She filed a complaint the next day after receiving threatening messages from ST. She told officers he asked her to accept Dh5,000 to remain silent.

He later sent another message telling her he would publish her pictures on Facebook, prosecutors say.

Officers instructed the woman to contact ST and set up a meeting. He threatened her again during their conversation and warned her not to miss the meeting at Deira's Al Mulla Plaza. Officers waited for him for two hours, but he never arrived. While returning to the police station with officers, she spotted him near Century Mall, where he was arrested.

ST denied the accusations against him at the police station, saying he was impotent and suffering from a terminal condition. Forensic tests did not determine whether he was capable of having sex.

The court ordered ST's deportation after his jail term.
