Nearly three tonnes of drugs ripped from the clutches of criminals by Dubai Police over the past three years has been destroyed. The huge haul of heroin, cocaine, crystal meth, opium and other illegal substances, seized after 215 successful prosecutions, was incinerated at Jebel Ali Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility. Essam Al Humaidam, Dubai's attorney general, ordered the destruction of the drugs in the presence of police, prosecution and court officials. Police have carried out a series of major drug busts in recent years. In December, the force revealed that officers had discovered close to 200kg of drugs during raids on two dhow boats at Dubai Creek harbour. Last May, hundreds of kilos of heroin, crystal meth and hash have been seized in what Dubai Police described as the country's largest drug bust to date. Drugs worth an estimated Dh278 million were recovered in an operation that led to 16 arrests. Police said the probe spanned across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain and Interpol were involved at one stage. Two criminal groups were monitored during an investigation spanning months.
