ABU DHABI // A woman fined Dh2,000 after being found alone in her car with her driver claims she was set up by her stepchildren.
The Emirati is appealing her conviction for "beautifying the sin" - a charge relating to romantic but non-sexual liaisons between two people who are not married or engaged to be married.
She told the Appeals Court she needed a driver because she did not have a licence.
She said that on the day in question they returned to her home and her stepchildren attacked them, carrying her from the back seat to the passenger seat before calling their father. When he arrived his children told him she was "on a date" with the driver.
The Court of First Instance found the children guilty of attacking their stepmother and fined them Dh2,000 each. But it ruled the wife and the Syrian driver were guilty of "beautifying the sin" because they should not have been alone together. Each was fined Dh2,000.
The woman and the driver protested their innocence in court last week. The children did not attend. Both defendants were released on bail and a verdict is expected on April 24.

Damage control is a big part of most hairstylists’ work right now, but it can be avoided. Steer clear of over-colouring at home, try and pursue one hair brand at a time and never, ever use a straightener on still drying hair, pleads Massoud.
