SHARJAH // Police yesterday arrested a gang of seven African men who allegedly stole Dh1.1 million from a businessman in 2010.
The suspects were arrested by Sharjah Police, who worked with officers from Abu Dhabi Police, two years after the crime. One of the gang was wanted for a 2010 murder while another suspect was wanted in connection with a number of robberies.
A police spokesman said the gang waited for the victim, an Arab national, to withdraw the money from a bank in Dubai. The man put the cash in an envelope on the passenger seat of his car and headed for his home in the Al Taawun area of Sharjah.
As he was getting out of his car a man snatched the envelope containing the cash and fled.
The victim notified police and an investigation team was set up to monitor the suspects and their home. After being given legal permission, officers raided the house and arrested the seven men, one of whom tried to slash his own throat with a razor but was treated by ambulance crews.
Tools used for breaking car windows were found in a car belonging to one of the suspects. The seven men confessed to robbing the man. They divided the cash among themselves and transferred it to their home country through a money transfer company.
The suspects have been referred to public prosecution.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
