Drug addict 'crashes into Dubai Police cars to escape arrest'

A former drug addict deliberately crashed his vehicle into three police cars to escape arrest, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Wednesday.

On May 3, a police team was sent to the 25-year-old Emirati’s home after he missed his court ordered routine check-in with police.

The defendant had previously been convicted in a drugs consumption case and, after serving his prison sentence, was ordered to undergo regular check-ins with police to ensure he did not begin using drugs again.

“I was among the team sent to his home in Al Warqaa 4 area. When we arrived I parked my car behind his, the other two cars parked nearby, some of us stepped out of the cars to go see him while others remained in the cars waiting,” said a policeman, 53.

The officer said the accused jumped into his car after he saw policemen stepping out of their cars, then rammed the police car blocking his way.
"Before he sped off, he crashed into the other two cars where other officers were sitting," the policeman said.
Police chased the man and arrested him after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed.

Medical tests showed that the accused had consumed drugs, the policeman said.
The defendant was charged with  endangering lives of police officers and causing Dh6,700 in damages to police vehicles.

Police said he admitted during questioning but was not present in court to face charges.
The next hearing will be on November 8 to summon him.
