A drunken man who stabbed his roommate to death just two days after arriving in the UAE has been handed a seven-year jail sentence.
The 37-year-old was being offered shelter at a labour accomodation in Jebel Ali, Dubai, by a friend when he got involved in a heated exchange with a worker he was sharing a room with on October 1 of last year.
The Pakistani had returned to the room intoxicated and awoke the victim by switching on the lights and shouting loudly on his mobile phone.
The victim asked the man to be quiet, leading to a fight between the pair.
A foreman broke up the row between the two men, but the argument flared up again soon after.
“I heard other workers also wake up and heard them asking him to stop shouting on the phone and to turn off the lights,” said the foreman, 46.
Another worker testified that the man dismissed the requests and continued using the phone.
The guilty party was told to leave the accommodation but before he left another heated exchange took place between him and the victim.
The Indian victim, whose age was not disclosed in court records, launched an attack on the man, who responded by pulling out a knife from his suitcase.
“He ended up stabbing the victim then continued brandishing the knife as he picked his suitcase and ran out the building,” said the foreman.
Workers ran after the attacker and restrained him until police arrived.
He was convicted of carrying out a physical assault that caused death and consuming alcohol when he appeared before Dubai Criminal Court.
He will be deported once he has served his prison sentence.

Teachers' pay - what you need to know
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
