DUBAI // Thousands of people marched yesterday to promote a message of peace ahead of the Dubai International Peace Convention.
Skydivers from the UAE Army team touched down on the 312th Road near Emirates Towers at 4.15pm, before more than 800 drivers, bikers and horsemen led the march. It was a part of a campaign to promote the three-day convention starting on Thursday, and was organised by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum World Peace Award.
Swati Basu, 38, went with her family and said such events provided an important lesson for her daughter.
"It is a good way of expanding on the idea of peace, especially for my daughter, because nowadays they are surrounded by such harsh and violent terms that we never grew up with," said Ms Basu, from India.
Volunteers walked among the crowd with slogans such as "Be Peaceful, Be Modest" and "Be Peaceful Away from Intoxication". The march was led by Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.
For the art-history professor Woodman Taylor, it reflected solidarity of the different nationalities in Dubai.
"We are here because we believe in peace," said Dr Taylor, from the US. "The leaders here are taking the ideas of Islam of harmony and understanding and spreading it to the community."
Nehaya Al Hamar, the Emirati head of the convention's financial department, said the UAE could play an important role in spreading the message of world peace, as so many nationalities were here.
The three-day peace summit will bring Islamic scholars from around the world, including Abdur Raheem Green, imam at London's Central Mosque, and Sheikh Hussain Yee, president of Malaysia's Al Khadim Organisation.

Electoral College Victory
Trump has so far secured 295 Electoral College votes, according to the Associated Press, exceeding the 270 needed to win. Only Nevada and Arizona remain to be called, and both swing states are leaning Republican. Trump swept all five remaining swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, sealing his path to victory and giving him a strong mandate.
