DUBAI // A policeman threatened to kill a colleague if he told his superiors that he had an alcohol problem, heard Dubai Criminal Court on Sunday.
The 54-year-old Dubai Police officer on the receiving end said he found out about the alcohol issues of the Yemeni defendant, 43, after which, on August 7, he received a visit from the drunken accused at a police station.
“It was 3.30pm and I was sleeping at the barracks at the Raffa police station when he came and followed me to the toilet then started insulting me with inappropriate words,” said the officer.
The defendant allegedly then threatened to kill him with a knife if he told anyone about him drinking alcohol. At that point, the officer restrained the defendant with the help of other officers before reporting him.
A fellow policeman said he helped out. “He told me what was going on and, when we went to the officer on duty, I heard as the defendant threatened to kill him, saying that, ‘if I am dismissed from work over this, I will kill you’,” he said.
The defendant told court: “No, I didn’t threaten or insult him.”
The next hearing will be on December 6.

Why your domicile status is important
Your UK residence status is assessed using the statutory residence test. While your residence status – ie where you live - is assessed every year, your domicile status is assessed over your lifetime.
Your domicile of origin generally comes from your parents and if your parents were not married, then it is decided by your father. Your domicile is generally the country your father considered his permanent home when you were born.
UK residents who have their permanent home ("domicile") outside the UK may not have to pay UK tax on foreign income. For example, they do not pay tax on foreign income or gains if they are less than £2,000 in the tax year and do not transfer that gain to a UK bank account.
A UK-domiciled person, however, is liable for UK tax on their worldwide income and gains when they are resident in the UK.

Mia Man’s tips for fermentation
- Start with a simple recipe such as yogurt or sauerkraut
- Keep your hands and kitchen tools clean. Sanitize knives, cutting boards, tongs and storage jars with boiling water before you start.
- Mold is bad: the colour pink is a sign of mold. If yogurt turns pink as it ferments, you need to discard it and start again. For kraut, if you remove the top leaves and see any sign of mold, you should discard the batch.
- Always use clean, closed, airtight lids and containers such as mason jars when fermenting yogurt and kraut. Keep the lid closed to prevent insects and contaminants from getting in.
