Anyone looking up the Dubai coastline in the vicinity of Port Rashid in recent months may have noticed a huge yellow box filling part of the landscape. Another form of floating home perhaps? Or possibly the world's largest air conditioning unit? It has actually been revealed as the BorWin Gamma Platform Topside which has been built by Drydocks World and is now on its way to Germany where it will be installed on the foundations already in place in 40-metre deep water. BorWin Gamma, a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) platform, is located nearly 130 kilometres off the coast of Germany. It will transmit about 900 megawatts of electricity from connected offshore wind farms in the North Sea, providing enough clean wind power to supply the annual electricity consumption of more than one million households. Construction at Dubai's Drydocks World off Jumeirah started in 2014. Officials said 13.5 million man hours were put in before the megastructure, which weighs in at more than 18,000 tonnes and uses 10,500 tonnes of steel – more than the Eiffel Tower, was ready to be shipped. The European electricity transmission system operator TenneT ordered the BorWin Gamme HVDC link from a consortium comprising Petrofac and Siemens. The converter technology and main electrical equipment have been supplied by Siemens, while Petrofac has been responsible for the engineering, construction and offshore installation of the platform and awarded the contract to Drydocks World for fabrication, commissioning and load-out of the topside. “Drydocks World has been involved in other projects for the German North Sea, having previously built the world’s largest capacity HVDC platform DolWin beta, and we are pleased to have the opportunity again to work on this innovative renewable technology," said Rado Antolovic, chief operating officer at Drydocks World. "The BorWin gamma project demonstrates our ability to construct complex projects according to the highest European quality standards, and shows the yard’s diverse capabilities, which extend beyond repair, conversion, oil & gas, to large-scale offshore renewable fabrication." The platform is set to go online in 2019. ____________ Read more: World's biggest offshore wind farm unveiled in UK's Irish Sea UAE backs breakthrough in offshore wind energy tech ____________
