ABU DHABI // British Girl Guides in the capital will join together at the Emirates Palace hotel tonight to celebrate a century of charitable activities.
About 160 girls and their leaders will get together at 20.10 (8.10pm) on 20/10/2010 to repeat their pledge to love their God, serve their country, and help others.
Edele Steel, district commissioner of the Abu Dhabi guides, said the centenary is being celebrated around the globe. Girlguiding UK was founded in England in 1910. "This week's celebration will help the girls realise they are part of a big organisation and part of a big event and linked to all these people by making this promise," she said.
Girl guiding was established in Abu Dhabi in 1967, part of British Guides in Foreign Countries. Since then, British girls have been joining the organisation as a way of keeping a bond with their home country.
"Being part of this helps the girls feel connected to the UK in a special way," Steel said.
Amber Ingham, a 16-year-old from Abu Dhabi, has been a guide for the last seven years. Now in the senior section, she has been explaining the centenary to the younger girls.
"To me, it's important that after 100 years we are still a community," she said. "They are all very excited, some of them haven't been to Emirates Palace before."

What is double taxation?
