Emergency surgery saves RAK boy's foot

RAS AL KHAIMAH // A 12-year-old Emirati boy who was fortunate not to lose his foot in a motorcycle accident is making good progress following surgery.

In a two-and-a-half-hour procedure, doctors reattached his left foot, which was almost severed from the leg when he arrived at the hospital at midnight on Sunday.

"He came in with a hanging foot," said Dr Yousef Altair, the head of the accident and emergency department at Saqr Hospital. "Up to now it looks OK and it has improved. The foot is starting to work a little bit."

Dr Altair is happy with the boy's response to the surgery.

"He's feeling much better and his foot is very good," said Dr Altair. "We have to wait and see what happens."

The boy was transferred to Khalifa Hospital in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Nepotism is the name of the game

Salman Khan’s father, Salim Khan, is one of Bollywood’s most legendary screenwriters. Through his partnership with co-writer Javed Akhtar, Salim is credited with having paved the path for the Indian film industry’s blockbuster format in the 1970s. Something his son now rules the roost of. More importantly, the Salim-Javed duo also created the persona of the “angry young man” for Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s, reflecting the angst of the average Indian. In choosing to be the ordinary man’s “hero” as opposed to a thespian in new Bollywood, Salman Khan remains tightly linked to his father’s oeuvre. Thanks dad.
