UAE launches local marine weather service

The National Centre of Meteorology, the UAE's official forecaster and centre for measuring seismic activity, launched a marine weather service on Monday.

The new site, named Al Bahar, meaning the sea, provides marine weather information for up to five days in advance, in English and Arabic. It displays maps showing wind patterns, wave height, sea temperature and currents and provides a general marine forecast for the upcoming three days in the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, reported state news agency Wam.

The data will be of particular use to fishermen, seafarers and even recreational divers.

The information is collected in real-time through coastal marine weather stations, weather buoys and automatic weather stations. Radar and satellites images on the site will update every 15 minutes.

A live forecast keeps track of tropical cyclones that could affecting the country. Just a few weeks ago, the NCM issued warnings about a tropical depression that developed into cyclone Luban. The cyclone would go on to make landfall in Oman and Yemen.

On Monday, forecasters warned of waves up to two metres high in the Arabian Gulf. The NCM called on anyone heading out to sea to do so with caution but said that the rough conditions would subside by 9pm.
