ABU DHABI // UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon has praised the UAE’s efforts to tackle climate change, ahead of a major summit in the capital next week.
“The UAE is emerging as a leader of a diverse energy economy,” said Mr Ban.
“I count on other countries to follow the UAE’s example and to pursue the many untapped economic, social and environmental opportunities of mitigating global climate change.
“This is the defining challenge of our time. The longer we delay, the more we will pay. The sooner we act, the greater the benefits to people and the planet.”
Mr Ban made the comments before announcing he will take part in the two-day Abu Dhabi Ascent starting next Sunday.
Attended by high-level UN officials, the meeting is organised in preparation for the Climate Summit this year in New York.
“The Climate Summit is a critical opportunity to inspire and scale up the actions that will lead us towards a low-carbon, sustainable future,” said Mr Ban.
“Abu Dhabi Ascent will play a pivotal role in mobilising action that will allow us to address climate change.”
Both meetings aim to build political agreement around key steps for reducing man-made greenhouse emissions ahead of an important UN meeting in Paris in December next year, when a global agreement on how to stop climate change is to be signed.

Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.
A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.
Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.
A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.
On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.
The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.
Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.
The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.

Ziina users will be able to use the app to help relief efforts in Beirut, which has been left reeling after an August blast caused an estimated $15 billion in damage and left thousands homeless. Ziina has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to raise money for the Lebanese capital, co-founder Faisal Toukan says. “As of October 1, the UNHCR has the first certified badge on Ziina and is automatically part of user's top friends' list during this campaign. Users can now donate any amount to the Beirut relief with two clicks. The money raised will go towards rebuilding houses for the families that were impacted by the explosion.”
