ABU DHABI // An irrigation masterplan for the city will see total reliance on wastewater to maintain green spaces and landscaped areas, it was announced yesterday.
The initiative, launched by Abu Dhabi Municipality, will reduce the consumption of fresh water resources, especially desalinated water and groundwater, the state news agency Wam reported.
"This project is undertaken in the context of the municipality's keenness to conserve irrigation water and adopt state-of-the-art technologies in constructing advanced irrigation networks.
"It also sets the provision of green spaces, parks and recreational facilities as a priority for the Municipality Abu Dhabi City in order to meet the requirements of the steady growth witnessed by the emirate of Abu Dhabi, along with the accompanying developments spanning green spaces and public parks," said Rashid Al Falasi, the director of parks and recreational facilities.
The initiative also focuses on identifying alternative irrigation methods that would see the existing network operated by one of the world's latest hydraulic modelling programmes.
The masterplan had been launched to contribute to the sustainable development drive envisaged in Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.

Mia Man’s tips for fermentation
- Start with a simple recipe such as yogurt or sauerkraut
- Keep your hands and kitchen tools clean. Sanitize knives, cutting boards, tongs and storage jars with boiling water before you start.
- Mold is bad: the colour pink is a sign of mold. If yogurt turns pink as it ferments, you need to discard it and start again. For kraut, if you remove the top leaves and see any sign of mold, you should discard the batch.
- Always use clean, closed, airtight lids and containers such as mason jars when fermenting yogurt and kraut. Keep the lid closed to prevent insects and contaminants from getting in.
