DUBAI// Emirates has grounded flights between the UAE and New York for the next 48-hours with Etihad Airways also scrapping flights today as Hurricane Sandy prepares to make landfall.
The UAE embassy in Washington DC has issued an alert urging nationals living on the east coast of the United States to remain indoors and stay in touch with officials once the storm, forecast to be one of the most powerful in recent history, hits.
Emirates has announced the cancellation of six flights that were scheduled between Dubai International Airport and New York's JFK Airport today and tomorrow.
Now EK203 from Dubai to New York and EK204 from New York to Dubai, which were due to fly on Tuesday, have been cancelled.
Earlier flights EK201, EK203 from Dubai to New York and EK204 from New York to Dubai, which were listed to depart today were cancelled.
The airline said the cancellations were caused by the severe weather conditions along the east coast of the United States and the closure of JFK Airport.
“Emirates apologises for any inconvenience caused to its customers, however the safety of our passengers and crew is of the highest priority and will not be compromised,” said a statement on the Emirates website.
The storm is forecast to be one if the most powerful in recent history with 75mph winds expected to lash the United States.
Etihad cancelled flights EY101 from Abu Dhabi to New York and EY100 from New York to Abu Dhabi, which were scheduled for today.
“Etihad Airways apologises for this disruption,” said a statement on Etihad’s website.
“The airline is contacting affected passengers and assisting with alternative travel arrangements.”
Etihad expects operations to and from New York to return to normal tomorrow pending improved weather.
