A housing development, funded by an Emirati philanthropist, opened in Sri Lanka on Sunday. Sheikh Zayed Village was inaugurated on Mannar Island, in the northern province of Sri Lanka, and contains 120 housing units, a mosque, multi-purpose hall and eight shops. The complex will be home to families who have been affected by natural disasters in Sri Lanka, according to state news agency Wam. Members of Emirates Red Crescent, led by Dr Mohammed Al Faheem, deputy secretary general for assistive services, opened the city that was funded by businessman and philanthropist, Mahmoud Fatah Al Khaja. They presented the Village to city officials during a ceremony attended by the local residents and Sri Lankan government officials. Dr Mohammed Al Fatahi, the ERC secretary general, said in a statement that <br/> the project is the outcome of Mr Al Khaja's efforts and the generous initiatives of the Emirati people. Mr Al Khaja, who frequently donates money to charitable causes, said building the city highlights the role of the UAE and its leadership in supporting people suffering from dire conditions. Sri Lankan officials said the launch reflects the strong ties between the UAE and Sri Lanka, and highlights the UAE’s generous support for the Sri Lankan people. The beneficiaries thanked the UAE for their support.
