NEC takes to social media for votes push

ABU DHABI // The National Election Committee has joined social media to help engage and inform citizens about October’s Federal National Council election.

The official name of the NEC social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram is uaeelection. All updates are in Arabic.

“The NEC hopes that these channels will help promote participation and awareness, especially with regard to the electoral process,” an NEC spokesman said.

He said the launch was “a new step towards implementing the political empowerment programme” launched by President Sheikh Khalifa “to develop parliamentary culture in the UAE”.

On October 3, thousands of Emiratis selected by the Rulers of each emirate will be eligible to vote for candidates.

In 2011’s election, turnout was 28 per cent. The NEC is hoping to increase that by publicising the preparations for the election as well as announcing activities, events and news related to the NEC.
