With fewer than 900 days until Expo 2020 Dubai, the concrete shells of buildings and steel framed structures have transformed the desert backdrop of the site in Dubai South. A video released by the Dubai Media Office on Twitter on Wednesday shows workers in yellow hard hats levelling concrete floors of buildings some of which are three to four storeys high. Trucks zigzag across the 4.38 square kilometre site transporting construction material and dozens of cranes lift heavy equipment to ready an expansive area for a World Fair in which 180 nations will participate. All major construction will be ready a year before the expo opens its doors on October 20, 2020. More than 15,000 workers have logged in over 16 million hours of work toward the overall goal of delivering an inspiring project with cutting edge architecture. At peak, the construction workers on the site will number 35,000. The expo will run for six months until 10 April, 2021 and is expected to attract 25 million visits with about 70 per cent of visitors from outside the UAE. Work is ongoing on the concrete columns of the Dubai Metro line and the elevated stations along Route 2020 that will extend public transport to the world fair site. Construction is also progressing on the three main theme pavilions Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability that form the basis for the Expo 2020. A tall domed trellis has been planned for the central Al Wasl Plaza that will be used as a screen backdrop at night to project images to visitors gathered within. The world fair aims to bring people together to celebrate innovation and ingenuity with its theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.' The Expo 2020 Dubai is the first World Expo to take place in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region. _______________ Read more: Solar trees and reused material in green design of Expo 2020 site Drilling begins in Dubai on key subway tunnel for Route 2020 Slip on your walking shoes: Dubai Expo 2020 will be pedestrian-only
